About us

A small firm that does what it says.

Stone & Barrow Construction is a building company based in Stoke-on-Trent, working across Staffordshire and all surrounding areas for homeowners and landlords.

The short version

We started this because too many jobs round here get finished badly.

Not through incompetence, usually. Through a quote that left things off, a programme nobody wrote down, and three separate trades all waiting on each other while the client sits in the middle with no idea what is happening.

So we run it differently. One contractor carries the whole job. The quote covers the making-good and the landscaping as well as the brickwork. There is a written programme with a completion date on it, and a written update every Friday with photographs, so you never have to ring us to find out where the job is.

None of that is clever. It is just the bare minimum, done consistently — and it is astonishing how rare it is.

How we work

Four things we won't move on.

We tell you the bad news early

Rot in the bay, a lintel that was never there, foundations deeper than anyone expected. It's always cheaper to hear it on week one than week nine, and we'd rather have the awkward conversation than hide it in a variation.

The quote is the bill

Every line priced, provisional sums labelled as provisional, and nothing added without you agreeing it in writing first. If we get a price wrong, that is our problem and not yours.

Your house is not a building site

Sheeted, swept and skipped every day. Kitchen kept working as long as physically possible. Neighbours spoken to before the noise starts, not after they've complained.

Same faces, start to finish

You'll know who's in your house. We don't hand a job to whoever is free that week, and we don't disappear for a fortnight because a bigger job came in.

Every job

Seven stages, from the first call to the certificate pack.

  1. 01

    The call

Ten minutes on the phone. What you want, roughly when, and roughly what you had in mind to spend. If we are not the right firm for it, we will say so and point you at someone who is.

An honest yes or no, same day

  2. 02

    Site visit and survey

We come out, measure up and open up where we need to. We talk through the options — including the ones you have not considered — and flag anything likely to cause trouble later.

    Free, no obligation

  3. 03

    The quote

A written, itemised quote. Every line priced, every provisional sum labelled as one, and what is excluded stated plainly. If a figure is a guess, we tell you it is a guess.

Fixed written quote within 5 working days

  4. 04

    Drawings and approvals

Where the job needs them, we get drawings done and handle the planning, lawful development or building regulations submission. We deal with the council so you do not have to.

Approvals in your name, submitted by us

  5. 05

    Programme and start date

Before anyone lifts a tool you get a written programme: start date, key milestones, completion date, and a payment schedule tied to stages rather than dates.

Written programme and stage payment plan

  6. 06

    On site

Same team from start to finish. Sheeted, swept and skipped daily. A written update every Friday with photos, so you know where the job is without having to chase.

    Weekly written update with photographs

  7. 07

    Handover

We walk the job with you and write the snagging list ourselves — we would rather find it than you did. Certificates, warranties and photos of what went behind the plaster, handed over as one pack.

    Certificate pack and workmanship guarantee

On site

The same faces, on your job.

We're a small firm. You'll know who's in your house, because it's the same people from first fix to handover.

Panelling set out to a level, before the plaster goes anywhere near it.

Strip-out and making good — the unglamorous two thirds of the job.
